The Groundhog was Wrong
Yes, Phil was wrong. And I think it’s driving everyone crazy, including me. Seriously, how often does that groundhog actually say we’ll have an early spring? And now that he does we turn out to have another fun little rain/snow/sleet/wind/cloud/gloom/annoyance storm heading our way. I suppose that’s what I get for taking the snow tires off my car.

If you know who Jasmine Star is then I need not go any further, but for those of you who missed out on her last workshop, here’s an opportunity to join her next live workshop in just a few weeks. She’ll be concentrating on the business aspect of photography and taking questions from fellow photographers both live in the studio and over the chat forum. Oh, did I mention that it’s FREE! Actually all Creative Live workshops are free, but if you miss it then you can purchase the recording for a great price.

Craigslist
I’m an avid Cragslister (if you will). I sell things, I buy things, I even bought my car on Craigslist. I constantly browse the listings, looking for interesting things to buy or different gigs that people need help with. Actually now that I think about it, I found one of my current jobs on Craigslist.
Well, anyway. It wasn’t until now that I feel compelled to write about my experiences on this wonderful website. Why now? Because last week I found a listing of someone selling a lens that I’ve always wanted. We met up on Saturday so I could check it out and by the end of our meeting I bought it. But it wasn’t the lens that left me smiling when I walked out of Kim’s tiny office, but having the feeling that I just met a talented and honest individual who represents perfect customer service on a website notorious for it’s lack of it.
Kim is the nicest painter/photographer that I’ve ever run across. She sold me a great lens, offered to write up a receipt for me and even paid the sales tax. All the time I was there, we had a great conversation. I learned more about what she does and she already knew about my new baby girl from having read my blog. So Kim if you’re reading this again, thank you. Your kindness is not taken lightly. With all of the bad stories from Craigslist, here’s one for the good guys.

Blizzard Update
Ok, its nearly a month after the Blizzard. I made the steaks, but I chickened out and made them inside on the stove. I have a cast iron skillet so it’s not too much of a downgrade.
Anyways, why such the lapse in updates? Well, sometime in there, MY BABY GIRL WAS BORN! Her name is Olivia and she’s completely awesome.

Blizzard!
Well, its the first blizzard of the season. I might be jumping the gun here a bit since it hasn’t quite started yet, but being that its about 10 minutes away and the warning are flying across the TV, I’m going to go ahead and make the declaration. So what does one do during a blizzard? … You guessed it, make steaks on the grill! And yes, our grill is outside. We’ll see how this goes since I haven’t started yet, but what can be so hard? Its only 30mph winds with snow coming horizontally at my face. Wish me luck!

HDSLR Class
It was over a year ago when I stumbled upon an unbelievable video online that was shot completely with a DSLR, a camera built for fantastic still photography but with (at the time) video options built in. What was so amazing about the video? The cinematic quality, the fantastic low light performance and of course, the angles at which many of the scenes were shot. It was like watching one of your favorite photos come to life. Today, many photographers don’t blink twice about these features, but at this time, it was a completely new feature that had been added to a DSLR for the first time.
The man behind the lens was the one and only Vincent Laforet, an experienced photographer who had his hands on the 5d Mark II for just two days and ran with an idea. At the end of it, he produced a short film called Reverie. Reverie is what caught million’s of people’s eyes online and got the wheels in people’s heads turning when they saw what kind of video could be produced from this new camera.
Skip ahead a good year.
My uncle Dan called me one day, knowing that I had been working towards learning about wedding photography and directed me towards a relatively new website that was presenting a 5-day workshop on wedding photography. Creative Live was hosting Jasmine Star, a young and extremely talented wedding photographer that nobody can say enough about. She’s a very energetic entrepreneur that has turned her love for photography into a thriving business, spending her time meeting great people and documenting one of the best days of their lives. Long story short, I watched the entire final day of her workshop which was over 8 hours. I couldn’t walk away, she was just too good. She wasn’t just knowledgable, but related greatly to many aspiring photographers that are lost at where to start. The things that I learned in that time was more than I could have imagined, and it made me want more.
Skip ahead a few more months.
It was my wife and I’s second wedding anniversary and being that I couldn’t stop talking about anything related to photography (sorry Jess), she put my mouth to rest and purchased the Creative Live recording of Vincent Laforet’s 3 day class that took place just a couple months prior. I was exstatic, and rightly so. I spent the next couple weeks watching the workshop intently, a little bit every night, learning about producing video with a HDSLR camera. Wow, what a completely different world it is from still photography. While watching it I realized how very little I know about video, despite everything that I know about photography. It really got me thinking about how I can use the very same camera that I shoot stills with, to make a cinematic quality video.
Currently, I’m working on ideas for creating a short film. Nothing special, but something to practice and play with the lighting and camera. Vincent’s workshop has really put some ideas into my head and knowing the amount of knowledge I gained from it, has made me want to watch the other four days of Jasmine’s workshop as well. The rave reviews from people on Jasmine’s blog have confirmed my suspicions about how useful her information is.
This is beginning to sound like a commercial, but Creative Live is just plain great! And it’s free if you watch it live. So if you are interested in learning about any type of art or design, they offer many different workshops and are adding more all the time. I highly recommend it.
I know that I’ll be spending a lot more time there myself.
